A little idea on starting up, go to estate sales. I remember when my grandmother died we had a couple of local used bookstores come by and they were in heaven! Could be a cheap way to get your stock.

I also came across your blog via Burnside Writers - hope you don't mind a bunch of strangers visiting. The reason for my comment: I get this daily email/newsletter about the bookstore business and this was in today's - a good possibility?:
"Is that an indie bookstore opportunity knocking? When the B. Dalton bookstore in Laredo, Tex., closes next month, this city with a population of nearly a quarter-million people will be the largest in the nation without a single bookseller. The closest bookstore is in San Antonio, 150 miles away.
The Associated Press reported that Barnes & Noble "believes a bookstore is viable in Laredo and has identified a location for a large-format Barnes & Noble, but the space will not be available for at least 18 months."
"It's not reflective of the city that they're closing," said Maria Soliz, Laredo Public Library director. "I know this city can support a bookstore."

I like the idea of combining the cafe, the bookstore and the barber shop into a smorgasbord of goodness. What small town couldn't benefit from such an establishment? Now, the hair and the food might be tough for some to swallow at first but eventually.....

At least you're only 32, I'm 36 and haven't figured out "my place in this world". Unlike you I have no talent or a dream which makes it even worse. I should have stuck with that racecar driver dream that I had when I was six. Back then nobody could drive those electric, 5 mph go-karts like I could!

My husband and I have a similar dream...except that, in our little bookstore, I would take care of the books, he would take care of the music, and we'd sell good tea and wine from small vineyards in our little cafe where we would host local artists of all sorts. If you find a spot, can you let us know? :)

On a side note, think of how free you are to make these dreams happen (I'm thinking specifically of your lack of a mortgage)...makes me envious!
